I am now into my third season of triathlon although I would say I am only just getting into the swing of triathlons. Last winter was my first full winter season of training, as I was training for the my first Olympic distance triathlon and finished it with flying colours.  I chose to do the Noosa triathlon and it was everything I expected it to be and more.

I think I keep things fairly simple with my triathlons and that kind of works best for me, but I must admit, every since I have acquired my Heart Rate monitor and followed a 20 week program I think that I train a lot smarter when it comes to every training session.  I try to do a lot of distance work and then put in the occasional speed session to get some more of the old fast twitch fibres. I try anyway.

Here is my personal equipment list that I use for my triathlons;

  • Polar S410 Heart Rate monitor
  • Nike runners
  • Cap
  • Euro sunnies
  • Togs (Speedo)/Dick Dacks
  • Avanti Monza road bike (Shimano sora running gear)
  • Syntace Straight Aerobars (I wasted too much time on Profile bars and decided to try some real aero bars)
  • Ironman full length wetsuit (I dont need this much in Brisbane but I did in Melbourne)
  • Goggles (Speedo)
  • Nike ACR (2 Velcro strap bike shoes)
  • Look pedals
  • Cannibal short shorts
  • Orca singlet

It seems like a lot of stuff but when it gets down and dirty its just you and the event that you are competing in. I have one main goal for my triathlons this year. To improve my swimming, when my wrist heals up and gets better I will join a swim squad and start working properly on that terrible 2min/100 metre swimming stroke that I have learn't myself.

I dont think I could stress to anyone the importance of a heart rate monitor it is without doubt the best investment I have ever made as far as sport and training goes. Other then that, I just love the exercise the cross training that triathlon provides and the actually racing, although im not so sure that I compete that much, as long as I am happy with my performance that is all that counts.
